Computer-aided
design (CAD) is defined as the use wide range of computer-based
tools which helps engineers, architects and other design professionals
in their design activities. It is an important geometry tool within
the Product Lifecycle Management process, which involves both software
and sometimes special-purpose hardware.
Some of the current
packages range from 2D vector based drafting systems to 3D parametric
surface. CAD is also referred as "computer-assisted", "computer-aided
drafting". Also some of the related acronyms are CADD, which stands
for "computer-aided design and drafting", CAID for Computer-aided
Industrial Design and CAAD, for "computer-aided architectural design".
These names may sound similar but there are quite a few differences
in their application.
